Arts and Culture Minister Winston "Gypsy" Peters, unofficially christened the stage of the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA) with a spontaneous performance yesterday morning. Gypsy donned his calypso hat and broke out in an extempore. San Fernando mayor Marlene Coudray and officials of Udecott and the media joined him on a tour of the San Fernando facility. Peters said his visit was to view the progress of the centre, which was due to be opened on October 31. However, he said that might be pushed back to coincide with San Fernando City celebrations in November. Peters said he was satisfied with the progress made and that the facility was approximately 95 per cent complete.
What Gypsy sang yesterday
In Port-of-Spain we have NAPA
Down in San Fernando is SAPA
An ah go tell you just now we going a little further.
Right now I don't want to be in a rage,
I'm the first man to perform on the stage, down in South.
So you know what I'm talking 'bout
Ah want you to have a good time here
Ah want you dance around without fear,
Ah want you to know, this belongs to Trinidad and Tobago,
I want to tell you my friend, this is we money that we spend
So we must make sure we take care of it right down to the end.
Anything that the Government do, remember that they did it for you
So even if the contract don't have a clause,
Remember that this place is yours.
