Chaguanas mayor Orlando Nagessar has commended the police for issuing him with a $1,000 ticket for speaking on his cellphone while driving. Nagessar said on Thursday around 3 pm he was driving along Factory Road, Chaguanas, when his phone rang. He said he was a servant of the people and felt compelled to listen to them. He, however, said he did not like his burgess to call him and only receive his voice message.
Nagessar, who is usually driven by a chauffeur, said he took the call while he was driving.
He said the caller was a resident from Felicity who asked about the borough's dengue-spraying exercise. Nagessar said he was stopped by a policeman who asked him for his driving permit. He said the police officer, who gave him the ticket was cordial. "I am guilty, I am wrong. I offer no excuses, I would be paying the fine," he said. Nagessar said he was happy to see the police vigilant. "This policeman should be praised for being on the alert and doing his job. We need more police like this who have such a high level of commitment to their job," he added.
