A corporal attached to the Scarborough Police Station has been detained by police during a "sting" operation on Monday night after he allegedly rented out his service weapon to a man. The officer was arrested for allegedly renting out a 9mm gun, left for safe-keeping at the police station, to a man known to police. According to reports, the officer was suspected of the act over a period of time after the arrest of two other police officers for the same offence in 2009.A police source said the corporal was arrested shortly before 7 pm on Monday after having been under surveillance for sometime.While being interrogated by investigators, he suffered a heart attack and had to be rushed to the Scarborough Hospital. Up to late yesterday he was said to be unconscious and his condition was listed as critical.The operation was carried out by officers from the Organised Crime, Narcotics, and Firearm Bureau and the Criminal Intelligence Unit.
