A zebra crossing and traffic wardens will be in place on Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, by Monday for the start of Parliament sessions at the new Waterfront Location, says Works Minister Jack Warner. But Warner has ruled out construction of a pedestrian walkover linking the Lara Promenade and the Waterfront since he said this costs too much. Warner commented on the issue yesterday following a tour by the media of the new Parliament facilities at Tower D of the Waterfront complex. Parliament officials said they would examine requests for a pedestrian walkover bridging the Waterfront to the Promenade over the busy Wrightson Road. This is to facilitate the heavy pedestrian traffic expected for Parliament operations.
Yesterday, former works minister Colm Imbert said the former PNM Government had planned to build a pedestrian walkover linking the Promenade to the Waterfront due to heavy pedestrian traffic including water taxi travellers. Imbert said he had planned to start building the walkover by the end of 2010 and expected to have completed it in three to four months. But PP Works Minister Warner said,"Since the Waterfront is only expected to be a temporary location for the Parliament, it would not be feasible to spend the amount of money needed for the walkover on this. Building a walkover here would also take away from the Waterfront's ambience." " A zebra crossing and traffic wardens will be in place on Wrightson Road on Monday for the start of Parliament," Warner assured.
