Police are investigating a report in which a Tobago student was struck with bottles by one of her peers shortly after school was dismissed. In a video posted on Facebook, the student, along with others, were seen arguing. One of the girls picked up beer bottles from nearby bushes. She threw four of the bottles at the victim who suffered injuries to her face, leg and upper body. Detectives in Tobago said the matter "was never reported to the police." In the past few weeks, other students have been under investigation by the Ministry of Education. Two weeks ago, 12 students at a college in north Trinidad were suspended for consuming alcohol.
Sharon Lee Assang, director of public affairs of the Police Service, said yesterday another inquiry involving school children was under investigation by the police.
It is alleged that a Port-of-Spain school teacher was sexually involved with two students. Lee Assang said that during yesterday's daily police news conference at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain. "The police have questioned the teacher and the principal. This is an extremely serious matter and the situation is being addressed," she added. She said the police were attempting to address community relations with schools. "We have police youth clubs and they work closely with people in the community. There are programmes to help with homework," she added. Attempts to contact Education Minister, Tim Gopeesingh, and Parent/Teacher Association president, Zena Ramatali, yesterday proved futile.
