A traffic gridlock trapped hundreds of motorists on both carriageways of the Solomon Hochoy highway yesterday after a 14-wheeler container truck capsized. Highway Patrol officers as well as officers of Macaulay Police Station attempted to take the advice of Works Minister Jack Warner and open up the northbound carriageway as a dual lane. However, this intensified the chaos as traffic management officers failed to place signs on the road to warn motorists that the northbound carriageway had been transformed into a single lane.
The incident happened around 12.45 pm when the truck, transporting two ten-foot containers, capsized close to the Macaulay Overpass. By rush hour, traffic began piling up from as far as Chaguanas. Police officers then decided to open up the northbound carriageway to accommodate the southbound motorists. By 4.30 pm the containers were removed. However, while the southbound lane cleared up, the northbound carriageway continued to be a traffic horror.
