Minority Leader of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Ashworth Jack yesterday called on Chief Secretary Orville London to resign after presenting an "illegal" bill to amend the THA Act. Jack led a boycott of yesterday's debate after the PNM-controlled Assembly decided to proceed with the debate on a bill to amend the Constitution to provide for the entrenchment of certain provisions relating to the THA and an Act to repeal and replace the THA Act to provide for the re-establishment of the Tobago House of Assembly to provide its powers and functions and related matters.
Jack said something must be wrong with London if he decided to proceed with the debate knowing that it was illegal. He said if he didn't know the bill was illegal then he should not be Chief Secretary. Jack then called for the immediate resignation of London as Chief Secretary. Jack said the debate "violates" Section 29(4) the THA Act. He insisted yesterday's debate was "in breach of the law. "It is therefore illegal to have the debate," he added. Jack said the process to adopt the bills was flawed.
