Despite a disappointing runway challenge showing and being at the bottom for the first time in the competition, T&T national Anya Ayoung-Chee will show her collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. Anya's fans were at the edge of their seats Thursday night as they watched the first part of a two-episode season finale. The episode saw Anya breaking down in tears and expressing frustration at herself over a disappointing first-look at her collection. Like previous seasons, host Tim Gunn visited the homes of the four finalists-Anya, Viktor Luna, Joshua McKinley and Kimberly Goldson-to help guide them with their collections.
Each designer received $9,000 to create ten looks in five weeks to show at fashion week. While Joshua, Kimberly and Viktor clearly had worked on designs, all Anya had to show were pieces of fabric after three weeks of work. When the designers returned to New York, the competition got intense as the runway challenge meant each competitor had to show three looks from their collections to the judges but only three designers would go forward. Both Joshua and Viktor's designs were praised by the judges but both were chastised for their styling. Anya chose to show a cocktail dress that the judges adored but her two other designs-a bathing suit and an evening gown -were given negative critique.
Kimberly showed a black evening gown and two casual looks. She too, was chastised for her styling. As the designers left the judges to deliberate Anya told the group: "I always knew it would come down to a decision between me and Kimberly." It came as no surprise that Viktor and Joshua moved forward, leaving Anya and Kimberly in the bottom two. At that point the judges described both women's looks as equally bad. They both appeared nervous but Anya's confidence was nowhere to be seen. Talking to the camera, she described really feeling the pressure for the first time after returning from Trinidad. She spoke about wanting to make her country proud and appreciating the support she had received thus far.
When the judges told Kimberly she would be showing her collection at fashion week Anya embraced her then waited for the judges to send her packing. The twist revealed itself then, however, as they told her she would also be showing at fashion week in New York. In the next and final episode of this season's Project Runway, the four finalists will show their collections at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
