Tunapuna police yesterday questioned the man who poisoned over 2,000 avocados. Sunday Guardian learnt that police have taken samples of the avocados for testing from the man's estate.Attempting to ward off thieves, the man injected the avocados with an insecticide. Since the incident, avocado suppliers/vendors are reeling in distress due to a drop in sales.
The most recent is St James supplier Rosalind Cox who claims she lost $10,000 in avocados due to no sales. Cox imports avocados from Grenada and they are sold to the Hi-Lo stores.Yesterday, Cox fumed: "Hi-Lo has pulled all the avocados off the shelf. I have about 21 boxes in my garage. Some are rotting. It is unfair."She called upon Agriculture Minister Vasant Bharath to provide her with some form of compensation.
