A 28-year-old Vista­bel­la painter sus­pect­ed of be­ing in pos­ses­sion of a gun was de­nied bail yes­ter­day. Phil Joseph ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Siemu­n­gal Ram­saran in the San Fer­nan­do Sec­ond Court charged with pos­ses­sion of a firearm. Po­lice claim he was held with the gun on Jarvis Street Vista­bel­la on Oc­to­ber 21. He was not called up­on to plead to the in­dictable charge. In ap­ply­ing for bail, his at­tor­ney Sub­has Pan­day, said Joseph was gain­ful­ly em­ployed and a fa­ther of two.

Pan­day said his client had no pre­vi­ous con­vic­tions, but one pend­ing mat­ter for rob­bery. How­ev­er, court pros­e­cu­tor Di­anath Har­richa­ran ob­ject­ed to bail on the grounds of the grav­i­ty of the of­fence and the preva­lence of such weapons. Har­richa­ran al­so in­di­cat­ed that the po­lice did not have the chance to trace Joseph to de­ter­mine whether he had pre­vi­ous con­vic­tions or pend­ing mat­ters. The mag­is­trate de­nied bail re­mand­ing him in cus­tody for trac­ing. He ad­vised Joseph of his right to ap­ply to a Judge in Cham­bers for bail. The mat­ter was ad­journed to Oc­to­ber 31.
