The seventh police officer wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting death of three people in Moruga has given himself up. The police constable surrendered himself to officers of the Homicide Bureau in San Fernando on Friday night, one day after six of his colleagues were arrested at their respective homes. The officers, including a policewoman, were being questioned up to late yesterday about the circumstances surrounding the death of Abigail Johnson, her friend Allana Duncan and construction worker Kerron "Fingers" Eccles. The three were occupants of a car when they were shot dead by officers of the Robbery Squad and San Fernando CID on July 22.
Attorney Subhas Panday, former minister in the ministry of National Security, who is representing the officers, confirmed that the seventh officer had surrendered. Panday said: "Last night he went to the station because he heard that they wanted him in connection with a fatal shooting. I visited him this morning and, as far as I am aware, he is still at the Homicide Bureau in San Fernando. He said some of the other officers are at the Barataria Police Station and are expected to be interviewed under the supervision of ASP Raymond Craig. The officers, ages ranging between 24 and 35, are being held in separate cells at several locations.
Panday said he did not know how long the officers would be kept in detention, but as far as he was aware the file had not yet been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard. The officers claimed that Johnson, Duncan and Eccles had opened fire on them when they attempted to intercept the car they were in at the corner of Poui Trace and Rochard Road. Their killings had triggered several days' fiery protest action by villagers. The families were visited by CoP Dwayne Gibbs and head of the Police Complaints Authority Gillian Lucky. ASP Craig, head of the Professional Standard Unit, was directed to spearhead investigations when relatives objected to the appointment of Snr Supt Donald Denoon, head of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations.
