Police exercises in Western and Central Trinidad over the weekend resulted in the seizure of two firearms and more than $300,000 worth of illegal substances. According to police reports, at around 10.30 pm on Saturday last, two men from the Diego Martin area were arrested on being found with unlicensed firearms. Police said the men were traveling in a white Nissan Wingroad vehicle when they were intercepted by Cpls Benny and Peters in a routine road exercise on Bagatelle Road, Diego Martin. A search of men and vehicle was then conducted and police found a Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol, a Luger 9 mm pistol and 20 rounds of 9 mm ammunition. Police said the men, both 24-years-old, said they were on their way home from a party. Police said the weapons were tucked in the men's trousers.
Both are expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate today to answer the charges. Meanwhile, at around midday yesterday officers of the Central Division, led by Superintendent Johnny Abraham and WPC Lowtan, searched several houses in the central area and came up with a large quantity of cocaine and marijuana. Police said a 35-year-old suspect was arrested at Roopsingh Road, Carapichaima as he attempted to conceal a plastic bottle containing both marijuana and cocaine in some nearby bushes. The same team of officers, with support from the Canine Unit, then searched a house at Todd's Road, Carapichaima, where they allegedly found a large quantity of marijuana hidden in a building block. An occupant of the house was arrested and is expected to appear before the Chaguanas Magistrates' Court today.
