The Telecommunications Authority of T&T (TATT) has forwarded a complaint to the Director of Public Prosecutions regarding the potential breach of the Sexual Offences Act and a video clip shown by CCN TV6 displaying the rape of a child. This was revealed in a news release from the authority on Monday. The video clip was aired during the Crime Watch programme hosted by Ian Alleyne on October 25 and 26. According to the release, several other complaints had been received by the authority regarding the same programme.
A letter also was sent to CCN TV6 advising the station that aside from potentially breaking the law, it may have also broken the concession granted to it by TATT. The letter states that as the governing body for telecommunications and broadcasting sectors in T&T, TATT was responsible for regulating the communications and broadcasting sectors. The release noted that although the Broadcasting Code had not yet been established, TV6 had been encouraged to abide by the provisions of the draft code. It had advised TV6 to "have its hosts conscious of the provisions outlined in the draft Broadcasting Code and to exercise caution while performing their duties as TV talk show hosts."
The release advised that the authority would continue its investigations into the matter. Aside from warning the television station organisations like the Coalition against Domestic Violence against Women and the Media Association of T&T (MATT) have condemned the broadcasting of the video. Chief executive officer at CCN, Dawn Thomas, could not be reached for comment. Messages left for her were not returned up to late yesterday.
