A 34-year-old Chatham man was shot and killed during a stand-off with police in Point Fortin on Thursday night. Don Caton, of South Trace, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the Point Fortin Area Hospital at around 9.13 pm. Police said he was a known criminal, wanted in connection with recent crimes in the area. Police said at around 8.25 pm, South Western Division Task Force officers were returning from an operation when they were alerted to a robbery taking place at Lisa's Bar on South Central Road, Cap-de-Ville. They saw a suspect running from the back of the building into a forested area. Officers pursued and came upon Caton some 300 feet into the forest. They said Caton was armed with a pistol and when they ordered him to drop it, he refused.
Instead, they said, he raised the weapon, and in fear for their lives, they fired several shots at him. Caton was struck three times in his chest and right leg. He was taken to hospital where he died moments later. Police said Caton was wanted in connection with the assault of a female security officer at Cap-de-Ville Government Primary School on Wednesday. It is also alleged that he raped and robbed a woman in the same area a few months ago. Minutes before the robbery, officers led by Senior Supt Ramsey, Supt Franklin Sampath, ASP Belfour and Sergeant Granger recovered a home-made sub machine gun from an abandoned house in Chatham.
