Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal says the removal of the curfew will be monitored on a day-to-day basis and can be reintroduced "at a moment's notice" if it is deemed necessary.Moonilal made the announcement during yesterday's Second Regional Clean Development Mechanism Workshop at the Crowne Plaza, Port-of-Spain.Speaking to reporters after he delivered the feature address at the event, Moonilal said:"We will monitor the progress on a day-to-day basis and even the curfew is subject to review and in the event it is necessary again it can be reintroduced at a moment's notice."
He said the Government would continue to assess the situation and was putting plans in place for the post-state of emergency, which involved not only policing but also a social and economic development programme.Moonilal said citizens should continue to be vigilant and cautious."Don't use this opportunity for citizens gone wild," he cautioned."Be extremely guarded in our conduct and in our approach because the country is still under an emergency."
He said the Government did not cave in to pressure from the business community, special interest groups or trade unions to remove the curfew.Moonilal said once it was clear a sector like the business community had made a suggestion or recommendation that the curfew be lifted it had to be balanced with security imperatives and requirements. He said serious crime had decreased by 70 per cent and T&T had experienced the lowest murder rate on a per-month basis for 20 years."We'd like that to continue," Moonilal added. He said: "Citizens must be cautious and take precautions and just don't use this as a period to get wild."
