Gov­ern­ment's an­ti-crime leg­is­la­tion moves for­ward to­day with amend­ments to the DNA Act to make it eas­i­er for po­lice to take DNA sam­ples from sus­pects. The bill will be de­bat­ed dur­ing to­day's re­sump­tion of the Low­er House. At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Anand Ram­lo­gan has said the ma­jor change to the cur­rent bill is that there is less em­pha­sis on the rights of the ac­cused in pre­vent­ing or ob­ject­ing to a DNA sam­ple in the in­ves­ti­ga­tion of mat­ters.

How­ev­er, the Op­po­si­tion PNM has said the bill was too dra­con­ian and in­vad­ed peo­ple's rights. Gov­ern­ment has said the bill's present form was un­work­able and im­prac­ti­cal and a to­tal over­haul was nec­es­sary in or­der for the bill to ben­e­fit the sys­tem.
