Government's anti-crime legislation moves forward today with amendments to the DNA Act to make it easier for police to take DNA samples from suspects. The bill will be debated during today's resumption of the Lower House. Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has said the major change to the current bill is that there is less emphasis on the rights of the accused in preventing or objecting to a DNA sample in the investigation of matters.
However, the Opposition PNM has said the bill was too draconian and invaded people's rights. Government has said the bill's present form was unworkable and impractical and a total overhaul was necessary in order for the bill to benefit the system.
