Six San­gre Grande res­i­dents yes­ter­day were fined $20,000 in fines for drunk­en dri­ving.The dri­vers-Kishore Khelawan, his cousin, Ricky Khelawan, Ju­nior Adams, Joel Joseph, Shel­don Moreno and John Sa­roops­ingh-plead­ed guilty when they ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Aden Stroude in the San­gre Grande Mag­is­trates' Court charged with dri­ving while un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol.

The men re­ceived fines, rang­ing be­tween $1,000 to $5,000.They were ar­rest­ed last Fri­day night in the San­gre Grande dis­trict dur­ing a road ex­er­cise, which was head­ed by ASP Neville Sankar, of the San­gre Grande CID.In a tele­phone in­ter­view yes­ter­day, Sankar said such ex­er­cis­es would con­tin­ue in the com­ing weeks, es­pe­cial­ly dur­ing the Christ­mas sea­son.

He al­so warned mo­torists to re­frain from drink­ing while dri­ving when vis­it­ing rel­a­tives and go­ing to par­ties dur­ing the sea­son.The ex­er­cise was led by Sgt Ken Lutch­man and in­clud­ed Cpl Randy Ban­warie and PC Kis­han Sankar. (DA)
