Desmond Alibey, 39, a businessman and father of two, of Clover Crescent, Arima, was shot dead during a robbery on Thursday afternoon. His death pushed the murder toll to 307 for the year and the 35th since the state of emergency was implemented on August 2. A report said around 5.30 pm, Alibey was outside his muffler garage at Industry Lane in Arima when he was approached by a group of people. An argument started during which one of the men took out a gun and shot him. The men stole several pieces of jewelry from his body after he was shot.
Detectives said they were looking for four men and a woman said to be involved in the shooting. The victim's cousin, Matthew Alibey, was also shot by passengers while plying his car for hire on New Year's Eve last year. In an interview yesterday, Desmond's brother, Walter Alibey, said his brother wore a large gold chain and believed the motive for the shooting was robbery. He said he was very "close to his brother and saw him everyday." He said Matthew was shot and wounded while plying his car for hire.
