World Diabetes Day will be observed tomorrow. The Rotary Club of Maracas/St Joseph will be organising a special Rotary Diabetes Awareness Clinic. The objective of this clinic will be to educate diabetics and a responsible family member on how to identify the signs of diabetes and its dangers as well as how to manage the disease. Rotary Diabetes Awareness Clinic will be done today from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Maracas Valley Community Centre to a target group of 100 people. According to President Azard Mohammed: "In Trinidad and Tobago, diabetes has and continues to be epidemic. In almost every family, there is someone who is diabetic. In Trinidad and Tobago, from sources such as the World Health Organisation, the prevalence of diabetes here is around 102,000 to 145,000.
"This has dire implications not just for the individual or the family who has to find resources to deal with a loved one who has perhaps lost a leg or undergoing dialysis but for the public purse. The effects are tragic because low cost alternatives are available to prevent this forecast from becoming a sure shot. Our Diabetes Awareness Clinic will focus on the low cost preventative measures e.g. good eating habits." Also taking part will be the Diabetes Association of Trinidad & Tobago, Nestle, Al Mawi Clinic and Ferreira Optical.
