Siparia Magistrate Taramatee Ramdass yesterday ordered 18 motorists arrested during breathalyser exercises over the weekend to pay fines totalling $75,000.They all appeared before the Siparia Magistrates' Court after being held in road blocks in the South Western Division.Among those fined was Kemraj Ramsaran, 28, who was ordered to pay $10,000 for driving under the influence. He was also disqualified from holding a driver's permit for three years.
Clyde Amoroso, 51, was fined $7,500, while Leon Sookdeo, of California, and Alexander Rampersad were each fined $7,000.One woman, Leander John, 48, of Gasparillo was fined $6,000 and banned from driving for one year for driving without a permit.
The exercise was coordinated by Senior Superintendent Gilbert Ramsey, Superintendent Franklin Sampath, ASP Simbonath Rajkumar and was executed by Sgt Ramsundar, Cpl Gosine and others. Traffic checks were carried out at Quinam Road and Coora Road, Siparia and Charlo Village, Penal.
