A wood carving of a Holy Eucharist at the Rock River Primary School in Moruga which appears to be oozing blood has been removed to the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Port of Spain. Several people who went to the school yesterday to see the strange phenomenon expressed disappointment that it had been removed. "We wanted to see it...When we got here, they said it was no longer in Moruga," Gloria Khan said. A school source said that at around 6 pm on Thursday, Father David Khan went to Moruga and removed the sacrament. It was taken to the Archdiocese in Port of Spain where samples of the reddish liquid were taken.
Father Antony Baskar, parish priest of Moruga, said he had no updates on the tests. "The last thing I heard was that it was removed and taken to Port of Spain," he said. Monsignor Cuthbert Alexander, of the RC Archdiocese, said a statement would be issued when all tests were completed. "I cannot comment at this time...In due course a statement will be issued," he said. A substance resembling blood was first observed coming from the item at around 10.45 am Thursday in the Standard Two classroom. Teacher Eric Lewis said his pupils had religious education as their first lesson and instead of speaking about Advent, he decided to speak about the Eucharist.
After the lesson, Lewis noticed sometime later that a reddish liquid was flowing from the chalice. Minister in the Ministry of Education Clifton de Couteau and two Roman Catholic priests, Father Baskar and Father Karuna Kumar, arrived at the school within an hour. A picture of the Virgin Mary was set up on a desk with two lighted candles and a wooden carving of Christ on the cross was hung next to the Eucharist. De Couteau said yesterday that he had no further updates on the tests.
