Port-of-Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing says he is disturbed by the alleged plot to assassinate the Prime Minister and three members of her Cabinet, and that based on evidence so far, he couldn't help but believe that it was created because of mischief. He said the international publicity derived from the alleged plot to kill the PM would hurt T&T for a long time.
He was speaking at the last statutory meeting of the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, City Hall, Knox Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday."I am really very, very happy that the Government recognised that the state of emergency had to come to an end," the mayor said."I am very disturbed, like so many in the society, about the alleged plot to assassinate the Prime Minister and members of her Cabinet.
"But I said it then, and I say it now, that when you call wolf, particularly when there is no wolf, the day will come when you really call wolf because there is a wolf and no one will take up arms to support you."He said he believed that someone had created mischief that had placed the country in a difficult position.Lee Sing said he hoped the new year would usher in hope and opportunity for the country and move away from negativity.
"Sales are down...businessmen are crying," he said."We have got to find a a way to create excitement in this place so that our burgesses will be gainfully employed in sustainable employment so that we would be able to look after our people, offer additional schooling for our unschooled and that after-school programmes will kick off and that we will use sports and entertainment to create loops of development."
He said despite tremendous efforts by the council, the progress made was almost non-existent.He called on members of the council to clear their calendars for a five-day meeting from January 16 to 20 next year "to dissect the corporation, department by department, district by district."
