The home of cricket icon Brian Lara is an “entertainment centre” which causes neighbouring residents “grief.” Port-of-Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing said this yesterday at the Port-of-Spain City Corporation’s monthly statutory meeting, Knox Street, Port-of-Spain. Lee Sing said a permanent stage was erected on Lara’s property at Lady Chancellor Hill and that “his activities” were impacting on the burgesses of the city. Lee Sing said the North East Trade Winds blew the sound of the music from the DJs to St Clair and Federation Park. He said although Lara lived in the city he was outside its limits.

Lee Sing said Lara’s property fell within the parameters of the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation or the Diego Martin Regional Corporation and so he was able to obtain his bar licences to operate the fetes at his residence. He said: “Brian Lara’s home has become an entertainment centre that is causing grief to the people of St Clair and Federation Park.” He said in December several “festivals” were held at Lara’s residence which affected the elderly.
The issue arose after Congress of the People councillor for South Port-of-Spain, Keisha Armstrong, asked that Pan Trinbago relocate its practice sessions from Victoria Square to Woodford Square because of noise levels which were adversely affecting senior citizens in the area.

Lee Sing said: “I think it is wrong. If it is Mr Lara wanted an entertainment centre he should have asked the country for Zen (nightclub) and we would have given him Zen but we have given him a prime property on a lovely hill and if you go there now you will see a permanent stage erected.” He said judging from the perpetuity of the stage, he could not say how much more grief his burgesses would have to endure through the hosting of fetes at Lara’s home. Lee Sing said: “I don’t know what kind of country we are living in and if it is because it’s Lara it is OK, then leave the steelbands in Victoria Square.” Efforts to contact Lara last night proved futile.
