A community activist and close friend of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar died yesterday when an eight-wheeler truck rolled over her head as she was returning home from the Prime Minister's constituency office in Siparia. Up to late yesterday, Persad-Bissessar was said to be in deep mourning, upon hearing of the death of 62-year-old Khairoon Rahamut, of Laltoo Trace, Penal. Investigators said around 10.15 am, Rahamut, one of the founders of the Siparia Women’s Arm, was crossing the road at Penal Junction when she reportedly walked into a truck and collapsed on the ground.

Rahamut, who suffered from heart disease, was unable to get up in time as the truck moved forward, crushing her head. She died on the spot. Her body was viewed by the District Medical Officer who ordered it removed to the Forensic Science Centre, St James. The death caused the closure of Persad-Bissessar’s constituency office for several hours. Senator Danny Maharaj, who visited the scene, said Rahamut was one of the longest-standing members of the  constituency office, who was devoted to community work. “Right now the Prime Minister is in deep grief,” Maharaj added.

He said Rahamut had earlier visited the “girls” in the constituency office and was on her way home when the tragedy occurred. At the family’s home, Rahamut’s daughters, Zorida Rahamut and Zorena Mohammed, wept as they took out the contents of her mother’s possessions which they had retrieved from the scene of the accident. Zorida said Rahamut  underwent angioplasty surgery recently and was experiencing muscle cramps. “She was a wonderful person. She did not deserve to die like this,” Zorena said. The truck driver, of Windsor Extension Road, La Romaine, remained at the Penal Police Station yesterday.
