A man who allegedly attempted to shoot a police officer has been killed. The victim is JoePaul Jonathan Sanchez, of Mausica Road in Arima. A report stated that around 4 am yesterday, a man told police he and his girlfriend were talking on Queen Street in Arima, when they were approached by Sanchez and another man who robbed them of cash and other valuables. The victim got into an unmarked vehicle with officers of the Arima CID and while driving along Mausica Road, they spotted Sanchez making his way home.
A police report stated that one of the officers got out of the car and told Sanchez to stop, but Sanchez assaulted the officer. The officer's revolver fell to the ground and Sanchez reportedly took it up and attempted to shoot him. One of the officer's colleagues in the car fired shots at Sanchez, who ran off and jumped into a nearby river. Officers of the Northern Division Task Force responded and found Sanchez in the river with gunshot wounds. The suspect was taken to the Arima Health Facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations are continuing.
