A man who al­leged­ly at­tempt­ed to shoot a po­lice of­fi­cer has been killed. The vic­tim is JoePaul Jonathan Sanchez, of Mau­si­ca Road in Ari­ma. A re­port stat­ed that around 4 am yes­ter­day, a man told po­lice he and his girl­friend were talk­ing on Queen Street in Ari­ma, when they were ap­proached by Sanchez and an­oth­er man who robbed them of cash and oth­er valu­ables. The vic­tim got in­to an un­marked ve­hi­cle with of­fi­cers of the Ari­ma CID and while dri­ving along Mau­si­ca Road, they spot­ted Sanchez mak­ing his way home.

A po­lice re­port stat­ed that one of the of­fi­cers got out of the car and told Sanchez to stop, but Sanchez as­sault­ed the of­fi­cer. The of­fi­cer's re­volver fell to the ground and Sanchez re­port­ed­ly took it up and at­tempt­ed to shoot him. One of the of­fi­cer's col­leagues in the car fired shots at Sanchez, who ran off and jumped in­to a near­by riv­er. Of­fi­cers of the North­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force re­spond­ed and found Sanchez in the riv­er with gun­shot wounds. The sus­pect was tak­en to the Ari­ma Health Fa­cil­i­ty where he was pro­nounced dead on ar­rival. In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing.
