A Siparia man who racked up $104,786 in child maintenance arrears, dating back to 2007 yesterday was jailed for 18 months after he admitted he had been defaulting in the payments. Lambert Grant, 50, of Thompson Trace, Quarry Village, appeared before Siparia magistrate Joanne Connor after he was arrested on six outstanding warrants. He will serve three months in jail on each warrant consecutively, adding up to a total of 18 months behind bars. He told the court he did not have money to pay the outstanding balance.
Grant admitted he stopped making payments to his wife in 2007. Grant was arrested yesterday at around 1 pm when Sgt Sookraj, in company with Cpl Wayne Ramdeo, Cpl Ramsaran, PC Nicolas, PC Jaglal and PC Rampersad, went to a house at Thompson Trace, Quarry Village, Siparia. They searched a bushy area nearby and held Grant. He appeared in court yesterday afternoon. Sgt Rajnath Sookdeo prosecuted the matter.
