Procurement Committee head: Opposition withdrawal ‘an act of bad faith’
Chairman of the Joint Select Committee of new procurement legislation in T&T, Dr Bhoe Tewarie, says the withdrawal of Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley and his colleagues from the committee was “an act of bad faith.” Tewarie, who is also the Planning and the Economy Minister said he was surprised by the action of the Opposition members as he was moving to reach consensus on the issue. He said he was “quite surprised and disappointed and I felt really it was an act of bad faith because nobody had raised anything (issue) in any of the meetings.”
Tewarie said he would like to urge the Opposition “to do the responsible thing and participate.” Tewarie said: “It seems like some strategy on their part.” He said the country needed the procurement legislation and he would do all he could to ensure that it was prepared. He admitted that the February 23 deadline for consensus was not likely to be met now. He said he was hopeful “the Opposition will have a change of heart.” He said he would do all he could to ensure the legislation was prepared as soon as possible.
“If they choose not to participate I would have to find a way of bringing the legislation to Parliament,” Tewarie stressed. New procurement legislation was one of the demands made by the Joint Consultative Council on the new Government following the Uff commission of enquiry into the Construction Sector and the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott).
