The St Thomas RC School, Mayaro, where parents protested on Wednesday over a suspected dengue outbreak, will be sprayed today. Vice president of the school’s PTA Selwyn Baker said he was told the building would be sprayed this afternoon. He said parents decided to stage the protest after 15 students and two teachers began experiencing dengue-like symptoms.

He added: “Three of them got sick last term and the others from the beginning of January to now. On Tuesday a student collapsed and had to be rushed to the district health facility and then the Sangre Grande Hospital.” He said parents also are concerned about bat droppings on the floor and books in the school. Baker said parents were keeping their students away, with the exception of Standard Five pupils, who were due to write the SEA exam this year.

He appealed to the Education and Health Ministries to treat urgently with and rectify issues at the school. Meanwhile, in a press release yesterday the Ministry of Health assured there was no dengue fever outbreak. The ministry’s Insect Vector Control Division (IVCD) Victoria East/Nariva/Mayaro Office received a report of one case of dengue on January 26.

The unit investigated that report by visiting the patient's home and school on January 27 and 30 and active breeding for the Aedes Aegypti was found within the school’s guttering system, as well as in a large water receptacle on site.
Spraying activities were conducted on Wednesday of 75 homes near the school and ultra low volume spraying of 300 to 600 homes near the school was scheduled for yesterday and today. The ministry’s National Surveillance Unit is monitoring the situation, it was stated. Confirmed or suspected case of dengue fever also can be reported to the Insect Vector Control Division (IVCD) at 663-2281(6).
