“We are not backing down!” said parents of pupils attending South Oropouche Government School as they continued their protest yesterday. The parents, who have been protesting outside the school since last Friday, have vowed to continue the action until a senior member of the staff was removed. Desiree Scott, secretary of the Parent Teachers Association, said the group would be meeting with president of the National Parent Teachers Association (NPTA), Zena Ramatali, on Monday. “We will send our children to school on that day but according to what transpires the protests will continue the following day,” she said

There were about 25 students at the school on Wednesday and even fewer yesterday, Scott said. The PTA claimed the staff member had been locking the school library, was denying access to the school’s grounds and cutting off water supply during class. Scott said the official also banned PTA meetings on the school compound and restricted parents from entering the school to speak with teachers. She said Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma was aware of their problem but had not assisted them. An official from the Ministry of Education said it was aware of the situation at the school and was investigating.
