Bandleaders’ boss wants free registration 2013

President of the National Carnival Bandleaders Association David Lopez said he hopes masqueraders will be allowed to register with their bands for free next year. He made the comment in response to statements from bandleaders that as performers they should not have to pay to entertain an audience. This comes after a fee was announced by the NCBA during a meeting with bandleaders in early January. Bandleaders had walked out of the meeting in opposition to changes announced by the NCBA, including changes to the route.

Since that time the decision to change the route has been reversed but bandleaders still disagree with the introduction of a “performance fee”. “I agree with the bandleaders. No performer should have to pay to perform in front of an audience. So I hope that next year when masqueraders go to register to play in a band, they can do so free of charge because they in fact are the performers on Carnival Monday and Tuesday,” said Lopez.
