A 26-year-old rob­bery sus­pect, of Co­corite, re­mained ward­ed at hos­pi­tal up to late yes­ter­day af­ter he re­port­ed­ly at­tempt­ed to hang him­self in the hold­ing bay cells at La Hor­quet­ta Po­lice Sta­tion. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, at around 10.40 pm on Wednes­day of­fi­cers on du­ty at the sta­tion heard strange nois­es com­ing from the hold­ing cells. When they checked, they found the man, of Wa­ter­hole, Co­corite, ly­ing un­con­scious on the floor of the cell with an elec­tri­cal cord wrapped tight­ly around his neck. He was tak­en to Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex in Mt Hope where, up to late yes­ter­day, he was ward­ed in se­ri­ous con­di­tion un­der po­lice guard.

Po­lice said the man was de­tained on Mon­day in con­nec­tion with a rob­bery and was be­ing kept at the sta­tion while wait­ing to be placed on an iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rade. Mean­while, a po­lice ex­er­cise at Phase Four, La Hor­quet­ta, re­sult­ed in the seizure of a home-made shot gun. The weapon was dug up in a foot­ball field by of­fi­cers of the North East­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force led by Cpl Sunil Bharath. The of­fi­cers found the weapon by us­ing a met­al de­tec­tor. In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing in­to both in­ci­dents.
