A 26-year-old robbery suspect, of Cocorite, remained warded at hospital up to late yesterday after he reportedly attempted to hang himself in the holding bay cells at La Horquetta Police Station. According to reports, at around 10.40 pm on Wednesday officers on duty at the station heard strange noises coming from the holding cells. When they checked, they found the man, of Waterhole, Cocorite, lying unconscious on the floor of the cell with an electrical cord wrapped tightly around his neck. He was taken to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope where, up to late yesterday, he was warded in serious condition under police guard.
Police said the man was detained on Monday in connection with a robbery and was being kept at the station while waiting to be placed on an identification parade. Meanwhile, a police exercise at Phase Four, La Horquetta, resulted in the seizure of a home-made shot gun. The weapon was dug up in a football field by officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force led by Cpl Sunil Bharath. The officers found the weapon by using a metal detector. Investigations are continuing into both incidents.
