President of the Police Social Welfare Association Sgt Anand Ramesar yesterday lamented the lack of action being taken by the police executive to swiftly deal with allegations of sexual harassment within the ranks of the Police Service. He made the comment yesterday as he confirmed that two senior First Division officers had been reassigned to administrative duties in Port-of-Spain pending investigations into allegations of sexual harassment.

Ramesar said, “The association has always questioned the lack of action in dealing with allegations of misconduct by senior officers. There appears to be a prevalence of sweeping these matters under the carpet, so to speak.” The allegations were levelled against the officers by six junior female officers, all of whom claim that the seniors made inappropriate and sexually offensive comments to them. The two officers were abruptly transferred out of their division, prompting a reassignment of seniors from other divisions, to replace them.

While he lamented the lack of action, Ramesar admitted that when the allegations surfaced “We did call upon the Commissioner of Police to conduct an investigation immediately and I am glad to say that he did respond.” While he said no notices had been served on the officers indicating disciplinary charges, Ramesar said the officers were unattached which meant that they maintained their rank but were not in charge of an office or division. The officers essentially have no designated duties.
