Residents of several central Trinidad communities are up-in-arms over the sudden closure of the Brasso Police Post, and the Gran Couva Police Station. "No word or advice or information was given to the populace, and now we are told that the Brasso Police Post will be closed to give way to 21st century policing. "What is that? Does it mean that the police would have more leisure time on their hands instead of attending to the cries and complaints of the people?" one businessman questioned.
"We feel that the people of central Trinidad are not treated fairly, especially with the high incidence of crimes, inclusive of agricultural products. Suddenly there is no police presence in the area," a former councillor noted. The Brasso Police Station was closed by the then UNC government around 1999, and after several years of protests, a police post was established at Flanagin Town. Residents are concerned about the safety of their families. They are calling on Minister of National Security John Sandy and Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs to rethink this new programme.
