Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has distanced himself from “the sudden, unexplained dramatic execution” of a search warrant on the Newsday newspaper and the home of journalist Andre Bagoo. In a release issued yesterday from his office, Ramlogan made it abundantly clear that whilst the Anti Corruption Investigation Bureau (ACIB) is listed under the portfolio of the Attorney General, he has no jurisdiction over this entity.  In the circumstances, the AG considers the continued retention of the ACIB under his portfolio to be an embarrassment and has asked Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs to assume full control for this unit. “It is in dire need of strong leadership and restructuring and thus far, the diplomatic pleas of the AG to the police hierarchy have fallen on deaf ears.” In the circumstances, the AG intends to raise the future of the ACIB with Gibbs in the context of the ongoing reform of the police service.
