A police anti-crime exercise in Arima on Saturday night resulted in the arrest of a La Horquetta couple and the seizure of a large cache of arms and ammunition, including a Russian-made AK-47 assault rifle. During a police press briefing held at the Arouca Police Station yesterday, ASP Joanne Archie of the Police Public Affairs Unit said that the exercise was part of the Northern Division's latest anti-crime plans in response to an upsurge in robberies in the Arima area.
According to police reports, on Saturday afternoon a team of officers led by Inspector Seecharan and Sgt Ganga Singh went to a home in La Horquetta where they seized the rifle along with a loaded Glock 9 mm pistol. More than 60 rounds of assorted ammunition and 200 grammes of high grade marijuana valued at $20,000 were also recovered during the raid. The homeowner, a 52-year-old electrician and his 41-year-old wife were arrested in connection with the find and up to late yesterday were under interrogation by investigators.
Meanwhile, 26 people were held in the Division during warrant exercises over the weekend. Those arrested were held for wounding, outstanding warrants and house-breaking incidents. Both exercises were headed by Senior Supt David Abraham, Superintendent Othniel Williams, Cpl Harewood and officers of the task force.
