Relatives of murdered Claxton Bay barber, Andy Ramjit, believe the 30- year-old was in the "wrong place, at the wrong time" yesterday morning when he was fatally shot. Shortly after the incident, three suspects were held by police mere metres from the scene of the murder. Two men, of Forres Park, were arrested when police intercepted their car along the Claxton Bay Flyover, while the third was held a short distance from the scene of the murder.
Police said they believed the shooting was drug-related. Ramjit, of Bocal Avenue, Forres Park, Claxton Bay, was killed a short distance from his home at 10.15 am, while watching television with friend Deenish Anmol, 21, of Forres Park Road, Claxton Bay, at his cousin's home. Anmol is fighting for his life at San Fernando General Hospital after he was also shot during the ambush yesterday. He is listed in critical condition.
Last Carnival, Anmol was shot during a robbery in Couva. He was helping a friend sell at a makeshift bar when bandits attempted to rob them. Yesterday, Ramjit's father, Anand, 49, said his son was in the wrong place at the wrong time and "did not deserve to die like that...No one deserves to die like that." Ramjit's mother, Seeta, 45, was still in shock after her son's murder and was unable to speak with the T&T Guardian. Anand said Ramjit was his eldest child. He was the first of ten children.
Seeta had to be supported by relatives as she waited for the police and crime scene investigators to process the scene where Ramjit was killed. Anand said he was at work when he received a telephone call that his son was shot and killed. He admitted that his son spent some time in prison, but had changed his life. He had been convicted of a larceny charge and was released from prison two years ago. Anand said his son was "very helpful" and had turned his life around.
Police reports state that around 10.15 am, Ramjit was liming at his cousin's home, Bocal Avenue, when a man dressed in grey jersey and blue three- quarters pants and armed with a firearm, walked up to the house. He fired several shots at the group of men, hitting Ramjit, also known as "Spanner." Anmol was also shot several times. Ramjit died at the scene. Anmol was taken to hospital by officers of the Mon Repos Police Station.
District Medical Officer Dr Clem Ragoobar pronounced Ramjit dead and ordered the body removed to the Forensic Sciences Complex, St James. An autopsy is expected to be performed later this morning. Assistant Commissioner of Police Terry Young, Senior Supt Lewis, Asst Supt Zamsheed Mohammed, Insp Matthews Noel of Southern Homicide Bureau, together with PC Francis, of St Margaret's Police Station visited the scene. Investigations are continuing.
