Firefighters called to extinguish a house fire at Shend Street Extension, San Juan, fled the scene after they got caught in the middle of a gun battle between rival gangs on Sunday night. According to reports, the firemen responded to a call at around 7.43 pm. At the scene, they found themselves in the middle of a fierce gun battle between groups of men with their faces covered with bandanas who were walking around the area boldly displaying their firearms.

The firefighters were forced to retreat until they got police protection so they could put out the fire.
By that time, two houses had been completely destroyed, leaving 12 people homeless. Police said the fire started when gunmen threw a molotov cocktail into one of the houses. Several hours later, in retaliation, members of a rival gang shot Alim St Louis, 18, at his Upper Seventh Avenue home in Barataria. The teen was taken to Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he is warded in serious condition.
