Several teachers of San Juan Secondary School were interviewed yesterday, after a report that a student was beaten with a broken broom stick by a teacher, for throwing paper in the hallway. A 17-year-old Form Five student told police he was at the school when a teacher took a broom stick, broke it and repeatedly struck him about the body on February 9.
The student said he was in the hallway when several other students began throwing paper at each other. He claimed the teacher took him to the staff room where other teachers were present. The teacher then allegedly proceeded to beat him.
The student went home and told his parents about the incident.
The parents then made a report to the police. Investigators said the student was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was treated and discharged. Detectives said they were awaiting the medical report before proceeding further.
