The People's National Movement (PNM) Women League yesterday condemned what it claim was the "the physical and verbal attack on Laventille East/Morvant MP Donna Cox. Cox claimed she was verbally abused and attacked by national security adviser to the Prime Minister Gary Griffith in the Parliament, Waterfront Complex, Port-of-Spain, early Saturday morning during a no-confidence debate against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Griffith has since denied the allegation. In a statement yesterday, the PNM's Women's League said the condemnation was stronger because "this attack was carried out within the walls of the Parliament." The PNM Women's League said: "It is also vexing this officer can display such blatant contempt and disrespect for woman" in the month in which International Women's Day, which was celebrated yesterday.
It added:"We call upon the Prime Minister to immediately withdraw this officer from her own service and that of the country. "He is unfit for the office he holds, and our sister, the Prime Minister, must dismiss him for this dishonourable conduct." The alleged incident has been referred to the Committee of Privileges in Parliament for investigation and determination. It allegedly happened during the debate on a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar early last Saturday morning.
