Port-of-Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing said a park-and-ride system will be introduced to the city on July 11. In a telephone interview yesterday, Lee Sing said while parking restrictions will be enforced in the city from April 2, the park-and-ride system was a part of the Traffic Control (Experimental Scheme) for the Woodbrook area to be implemented later in the year.
The park-and-ride system will reduce the number of vehicles by having drivers park at specific points from where they will be shuttled into the city. Lee Sing said the locations for public parking had not been decided yet, and added that Works Minister Jack Warner was handling that aspect.
Last year, Lee Sing named the Queen's Park Savannah as one of two locations chosen.
The other was the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Under the new traffic scheme, Ariapita Avenue and Tragarete Road will be made one-way. Speaking on the traffic measures, Lee Sing said the regulations were a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Works, the City Corporation and the senior superintendent at the police Traffic Branch.
Lee Sing said consultation on the project was ongoing, and changes were still being discussed. Lee Sing said residents had already been consulted, through the Woodbrook Residents Association. "There was a town meeting to present the plans to Woodbrook residents, and the taxi drivers' association was also consulted."
