San Fernando mayor Marlene Coudray is now one of the United National Congress's (UNC) deputy political leaders. Yesterday, UNC elections committee chairman, Khemchan Ramdath, in a release, declared Coudray the winner ahead of Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan. The former Congress of the People (COP) member defeated Khan by 2,307 votes. She received 7,635 votes in Saturday's UNC internal elections.
Chaguanas West MP and Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Austin Warner was re-elected with an avalanche of 12,000 votes ahead of his closest rival, Ashvani Mahabir, who could only muster 656 votes. Mooniram Heru, the third candidate who challenged Warner received a paltry, 201 votes.
However, the elections belonged to Housing and Environment Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal and his Nationalists slate as they won almost all the National Executive positions. Warner was the only other candidate, outside of the Nationalists slate, to win his post. He received 12,656 votes from Saturday's elections, as he topped all the candidates attaining the highest number of ballots.
Although the internal elections saw the re-emergence of former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday in the political limelight as he backed the Generation Next slate, its candidates failed to capture a post.
The following is the declaration by chairman of the Internal Election Committee of the United National Congress of the results of the elections held on Saturday March 24th, 2012 for positions on the National Executive.
