Just how much the five members of the People's Partnership have conformed to their Fyzabad accord will be examined at today's meeting of the Partners at the Diplomatic Centre. The 4 pm meeting, hosted by UNC leader Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar, will take place after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) leader David Abdulah has said.
The much-touted accord, signed by the leaders of the five political parties in the coalition on April 21, 2010, forms the basis for its foundation. The accord was the subject of a huge formal launch of the PP at Charlie King Junction, Fyzabad, in April 2010.
But the accord has not been fail-safe. There have, for instance, been mounting calls from within the Congress of the People (COP) over the last year, first to revisit and try to strengthen the accord, and more lately, to do away with it completely. At a January meeting, efforts by COP chairman Joseph Toney to seek a resolution to strengthen the accord was instead met with calls from COP activists to do away with it.
Members noted that COP leader Prakash Ramadhar's recent call for meeting of Partnership leaders to set up mechanisms for better internal workings was met with criticism from some PP quarters. The COP, since then, has not moved on the accord issue.
The accord, however, may be the basis for justifying many of the concerns at today's meeting of the People's Partnership leaders since the COP has cited breach of several principles in the most recent issues plaguing the Partnership. The MSJ also has expressed concerns about various issues concerning accord principles.
The MSJ's ten-point framework of concerns will be among issues raised by the COP and another partners at today's meeting. Abdulah said yesterday: "It will be a very long meeting."
