Director of the Police Service Public Affairs Unit Sharon Lee Assang said yesterday the the 21st-century Policing Initiative was not implemented in Tobago when a female visitor was raped, robbed and beaten by criminals last year. Lee Assang spoke after yesterday's daily news briefing at the Police Administration Building, Port-of-Spain.
People's National Movement senator Dion Isaac raised the issue during his maiden contribution in the Senate on Tuesday. Lee Assang added: "The matter which recently was reported in the media regarding a matter in Tobago occurred on December 10, 2010.
"Two suspects have been arrested and charged with the offence. "The changes to the deployment structure in Tobago will address situations such as this. "Officers no longer sit in the stations, They are out in the communities preventing crimes from occurring.
"If, however, a crime occurs, we ask the matter be reported by calling 999 and in Tobago 211," Lee Assang added.
