The plug has apparently been pulled on Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) chairman Omar Khan. Khan who was appointed by Cabinet on October 7, 2010 to head the commission is expected to tender his resignation tomorrow.
Khan, also manager of the T&T cricket team, denied that he was fired. Well placed Government sources, however, indicated that he had been forced to resign after certain allegations had been levelled against him. However, it had nothing to do with the fact that Khan came under scrutiny last July after the Opposition raised queries about his qualifications as it relates to his suitability for the post.
Khan claimed he was the holder of a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from UWI and a Masters in Business Administration from the Arthor Lok Jack Institute of Business. He had been subsequently asked by Public Utilities Minister Emmanuel George to provide proof of his credentials. Khan said he would submit his resignation tomorrow.
"When I do the letter then I will resign. I have not resigned as yet." Khan said following a discussion with the minister, he explained that he could not afford the time T&TEC needed. "It's a decision I had to make with my involvement with cricket...and other personal matters I have to deal with."
Yesterday, George denied that Khan was fired. George also denied that Khan's resignation stems from bribery allegations. On Friday, George said he spoke to Khan who indicated he would resign tomorrow. George said Khan will outline the reasons for his departure in his letter. Asked if Khan's impending resignation came as a surprise to him, George said "no" since they often spoke.
On whether Khan had hinted beforehand that he was going to leave T&TEC, George said "I know there was a couple of issues he had, which he spoke about all the time."
