An autopsy is expected to be performed on the body of baby Sharmin Maharaj later today to determine the cause of her death. Sharmin was found dead in bed on Sunday morning at her home on Phekhoo Trace, Gasparillo. She was four days short of three months. Police reports stated that Sharmin's mother, Amy Ramsawak, 26, fed her around 2 am and put her to sleep. Around 5.45 am, she went to check on the baby and found her dead. Ramsawak raised an alarm and the police were contacted.
Her husband, Suresh Maharaj, said Emergency Health Services personnel were also contacted. When they arrived at the home, emergency medical technicians tried in vain to revive the baby. She was pronounced dead on arrival at San Fernando General Hospital. Maharaj said two days after his daughter was born, doctors performed an emergency colostomy on the child. A colostomy involves the creation of an opening in the abdomen known as a stoma to allow for the passage of stool which is collected in a bag.
