Easter limes at Caura River ended abruptly for 11 drunk drivers yesterday morning. The drivers were all arrested between 8 and 11 am, while driving along the Caura Royal Road towards the popular river. The drivers were administered the breathalyser test and recorded readings over 35 microgrammes of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit.
They were taken to the Tunapuna Police Station, where they were charged with drunken driving, which carries a maximum penalty of an $8,000 fine or up to five years in prison. They are expected to appear before a Tunapuna magistrate on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, two men were arrested during the exercise for possession of marijuana. Both men, of El Socorro, reportedly had the drugs hidden in their pants and were arrested with the assistance of the Police Canine Unit. Involved in the exercise were Cpl Harrylal and PCs Tewari and Joseph.
