The Guanapo landfill is now open again, more than a week after a major fire broke out at the site. The Solid Waste Management Company Ltd (SWMCOL) said in a release yesterday that the fire that broke out at the landfill on April 5 has now been "fully contained and brought under control." Smoke and ash from the fire covered a wide area and caused concern about possible health hazards and environmental pollution. SWMCOL said regional corporations, commercial haulers, and other site users can now access the landfill again.
Some residents in the area make a living by scavenging at the landfill. The company apologised for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure. SWMCOL also thanked those who it said had responded quickly and assisted during the "temporary emergency." They were the Ministry of Local Government, local MP Rodger Samuel, the Fire Services, the Forestry Division and the Environmental Management Authority. The company also asked again for anyone who knows what caused the fire to contact the Arima police.
