The Gua­napo land­fill is now open again, more than a week af­ter a ma­jor fire broke out at the site. The Sol­id Waste Man­age­ment Com­pa­ny Ltd (SWM­COL) said in a re­lease yes­ter­day that the fire that broke out at the land­fill on April 5 has now been "ful­ly con­tained and brought un­der con­trol." Smoke and ash from the fire cov­ered a wide area and caused con­cern about pos­si­ble health haz­ards and en­vi­ron­men­tal pol­lu­tion. SWM­COL said re­gion­al cor­po­ra­tions, com­mer­cial haulers, and oth­er site users can now ac­cess the land­fill again.

Some res­i­dents in the area make a liv­ing by scav­eng­ing at the land­fill. The com­pa­ny apol­o­gised for any in­con­ve­nience caused by the tem­po­rary clo­sure. SWM­COL al­so thanked those who it said had re­spond­ed quick­ly and as­sist­ed dur­ing the "tem­po­rary emer­gency." They were the Min­istry of Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment, lo­cal MP Rodger Samuel, the Fire Ser­vices, the Forestry Di­vi­sion and the En­vi­ron­men­tal Man­age­ment Au­thor­i­ty. The com­pa­ny al­so asked again for any­one who knows what caused the fire to con­tact the Ari­ma po­lice.
