A 45-year-old Va­len­cia man was chopped about the body dur­ing an ar­gu­ment over a SIM card in San­gre Grande on Thurs­day night. Bri­an La Croix, of KP Lands, re­mained ward­ed in crit­i­cal con­di­tion at the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal up to late yes­ter­day.

A 21-year-old man, of Princes Town, held for ques­tion­ing by po­lice, was in cus­tody last night. Po­lice said around 10.45 pm, La Croix and the man got in­to a heat­ed ar­gu­ment at Sap­phire Dri­ve, San­gre Grande. The sus­pect re­port­ed­ly chopped La Croix sev­er­al times with a cut­lass. He was tak­en to the San­gre Grande Dis­trict Hos­pi­tal and lat­er trans­ferred to Port-of-Spain.

Cpls Bernand, Wal­lace, PC Ra­goo­bar and WPC White vis­it­ed the scene and are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

La Hor­quet­ta mur­der sus­pects held

Three mur­der sus­pects were among eight peo­ple held in La Hor­quet­ta yes­ter­day dur­ing a po­lice ex­er­cise. The of­fi­cers al­so seized a Beretta pis­tol, 11 rounds of 5.56 am­mu­ni­tion, 78 rounds of 9mm am­mu­ni­tion, an AK-47 as­sault ri­fle mag­a­zine and an­oth­er used in the Galil.

The ex­er­cise, su­per­vised by act­ing Se­nior Supt David Abra­ham, was car­ried out by In­sp Williams, act­ing In­sp Bap­tiste, act­ing Sgts Hare­wood, and Jer­ry, Cpl Craw­ford of the North­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force and Tu­na­puna CID. A 33-year-old man; his wife, 33; and a friend were al­so ar­rest­ed and charged with pos­ses­sion of mar­i­jua­na.

The mur­der sus­pects, held in con­nec­tion with the four re­cent mur­ders in the com­mu­ni­ty, are ex­pect­ed to be put on iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rades over the week­end. Abra­ham said the ex­er­cise was in re­sponse to crime in La Hor­quet­ta.
