A daring daylight robbery in the heart of Port-of-Spain led police on a chase for two suspects who tried to escape through the city’s busy streets. At around 3 pm yesterday, two men went into the Park Street office of Tateco Credit Union, carrying loaded pistols and announced a hold-up. As one of the robbers jumped over the counter and demanded, “Empty the register,” the other ordered employees and customers to hand over  their valuables.

Unfortunately for the robbers, the cashier pressed the panic button and alerted security personnel to send a distress signal, to which police promptly responded. Although the bandits did not get hold of any cash, a number of waiting clients were robbed of their cellular phones before the men tried to make a quick getaway. They left the building and darted across Park Street, and down Abercromby Street, then sprinted through Woodford Square. Police caught up after chasing them all the way to the Brian Lara Promenade. As passers-by looked on in amazement, officers from the Central Police Station and the Port-of-Spain Division converged on one of the suspects, then caught the other a few moments later as he tried to escape along Abercromby Street. Police suspect the men may have dumped the weapons as they ran away. Cpl Lopez of the Central Police Station is continuing inquiries.
