Housing and Environment Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal says technocrats are still reviewing the technical details of the possibility of adjusting Phase Two of the $7.2 billion Point Fortin to San Fernando highway. Moonilal was speaking to reporters at the launch of a school debate competition, held at the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre in Couva yesterday. He said citizens had a legitimate right to protest if they felt that the highway was not in their best interest. However, he said Government had not "slammed the door" on any new proposal being put forward by activists. "My information is that the Ministry of Works and the people who are objecting to the highway are engaged in talks, and we are now looking at the technical issues surrounding the new proposals," Moonilal said.
He added: "Once we can sort out the technical issues, we will be able to please everyone." In the meantime, Moonilal said, contractors were continuing to build the highway from the Point Fortin end as well as Phase One from Golconda to Debe. "They are doing this while they look at the technical aspects of the adjustments to the highway. There is no immediate problem right now," Moonilal said. He said Government could not reach a conclusion unless the proposals are explored in technical detail.
